It took some doin’, but my Our Vietnam Wars series, Volumes 1-4, have now been published in paperback by IngramSpark, a distributor to most Public Library systems in the country. Acquisitions by libraries are usually controlled by the librarians and run through various co-ops and suppliers, of which IngramSpark is one. They use both the title and the ISBN number to identify books. To get it in your local library, ask your librarian to order them from IngramSpark. The books have been a great help to veterans of all services by showing they are not alone. Get copies in your library to help spread the word. The books are brand new to the system. They may not be in their lists or catalogues yet, but they can be ordered by the ISBN.

Volume 4 of Our Vietnam Wars has now joined the first three volumes in the top 50 of the Amazon and Kindle books on the Vietnam War. That is a real plus and shows the extent to which these stories of now 240 Vietnam veterans contained in the four volumes have resonated with readers, both veterans and nonveterans. These are not “war books.” They are the stories of the men and women who served, where they came from, their background and training, their experiences and memories during their time in Vietnam, and most importantly, but they did after they came home.

The Vietnam War dominated my generation and affected so many lives in so many different ways. Some of us were drafted. Some enlisted. Some became war heroes, intentional or not, but most of us were just trying to survive. Most books on the war, and there are many good ones, only tell one persons experiences in one unit during one year. These books do much more. Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, or Coast Guard, American, Australian, or New Zealanders, Vietnam was all about luck, good or bad. And there were hundreds of different wars depending on where you were, the year you were there, your service, branch, unit, rank, job, and race. The Audio Book version of Our Vietnam Wars Volume 1 came out on Amazon’s Audible audiobook site a few days ago. Some people read, some people listen to audiobooks, and some do both. It’s a great listen, with almost 13 hours of Vietnam stories from the interviews I conducted.

As I told some of the 100 guys and gals whose stories are in the book, I tried to get Tom Selleck, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, and Meryl Streep to narrate their roles, but they were regrettably unavailable. Instead, I used the ever-versatile LA voice actor Eddie Frierson, who narrated four of my earlier e-books into audio books. Eddie is fantastic, and has proven many times over that he can provide hundreds of different voices and regional accents as needed. In LA, he has worked for many studios in movies and cartoons, providing voice-overs, specialty effects, and characcter voices.

But that wasn’t how most of us spent our year. In February, I published Volume 1. Due to the amazing response it received from vets and their families, I’m publishing Volume 2, with even more interesting, exciting, and informative stories. Bob Burke is on a Well-Deserved R&R for A While

SOME DETAILS ON MY NEXT BOOK

My Bob Burke action adventure series has become very popular with my readers. Call me stupid, but I’m temporarily setting it aside to finish something that has become a bit more important to me in recent years. I know, I know; you never jump off a winning horse, but sometimes you’ve got to follow your passion.

In my case, that’s the Vietnam War. If your lived in the 1960s and 70s, it was the 800-pound gorilla in the room, one that effected every facet of our lives. Over 2.7 million of us served, 304,000 were wounded, 75,000 severely disabled, and over 58,220 of our brothers and sisters died there.

Unfortunately, all that most of our kids and grand kids know about that war is what they see in the Oliver Stone movie, Platoon, or in the handful of better novels, all of which center on an infantry unit in the jungle on the Cambodian border in 1968. That was Oliver’s war. He was there, bless his Hollywood heart, but it wasn’t mine. In fact, there were hundreds of different wars, depending on the year you were there, the service you were in, your branch, location, job, and your rank.

What I’m writing is not a war book; rather, it is a very personal look at the men and women who served there. The title is “Our Vietnam Wars.”Through in-depth interviews with 100 vets, I hope to capture the diversity of their experience “in country,” in photos and 3-5-page vignettes, and touch on what they did before and after the war, and how it effected them. I now have 89 interviews finished and I think they are fascinating stories.

We are all old and gray now, pushing 70, and beset by a myriad of illnesses, but I hope this book will show what we saw and felt there. Part of the urgency to tell our stories is Agent Orange. It’s killing us off in increasing numbers now, and as many now say, “They didn’t get us back then, but they are doing a first-class job of it now.”

I hope to have this book out by year’s end. I’ll keep you posted on my progress and when you should expect to see it. I think it will be a great read.
