His tales of Bob Burke are creative and engaging, giving us civilians intriguing insights into the world of our armed services that an outsider couldn’t possibly imagine. Once again the author has delivered a great story that keeping in cadence with his previous books delivers more than what the reader expected. Damn fine job!

Numbered as the fifth book in the series, and copyrighted 2021, I’m going to assume this is the most recent book about Bob Burke, retired Delta operator and beloved leader of some merry – but deadly – merry men. Since I personally have no military experience (with one of the last student deferments, I was protesting the war that Brown fought in Vietnam)i I will leave any commenting on the accuracy of his knowledge about how things work in our Armed Services to those who do. However, I have little doubt they would find flaws.
If you haven’t read any of the four preceding Burke novels, it isn’t necessary to enjoying this one – and in a world where self-published authors can churn out book after book by Dr-using text and descriptions of characters, where their references to previous books almost require you to read earlier Brown shows some very fine skills by making each of his ongoing characters out to be simply humans with lives that contain things in their past. Which, by the way, has the intended effect of aiming to read the earlier books to be a potential wealth of good stories instead of what’s needed to fully background the current book.
